Takreer awards UAE port facility contract


New marine port and bunker-producing refinery facilities are expected to be completed by 2014.

South Korean construction firm GS Engineering & Construction Co. has announced that it has clinched a new order to build a $520 million marine port facility in the United Arab Emirates' Ruwais refinery project.

The port is to be built in Ruwais, located approximately 240 kilometres west of Abu Dhabi, and will be used for shipments of crude oil and oil products.

According to GS, the order for the project was placed by Abu Dhabi Oil Refinery Company (Takreer), shortly after winning a record US$3.1 billion contract to build oil refinery facilities in the same area.

Takreer plans to construct a new 400,000 barrels-per-day refinery next to the existing Ruwais plant [pictured]. The refinery produces 120,000 barrels-per-day (bpd) of crude oil and 280,000 bpd of condensate.

Once the project is finished, the Ruwais refinery will be able to produce bunker fuel, gas oil, aviation turbine fuel, kerosene, unleaded gasoline, naphtha, liquefied petroleum gas(LPG), propylene and other hydrocarbon derivatives.

Construction of the facilities is expected to be completed by February 2014.
