Concept ship to be displayed at Expo 2012

Future concept ship is powered by LNG, fuel cells, solar cells and wind power.

A model of the NYK Super Eco Ship 2030, NYK's future concept ship, will be displayed at Expo 2012, an international exposition to be held in Yeosu, Korea, from May 12 to August 21.

The theme of the expo will be: "The Living Ocean and Coast: Diversity of Resources and Sustainable Activities", and the event will feature displays illustrating the progress and future prospects of maritime technology.

The Japan pavilion will feature a model of the NYK Super Eco Ship 2030, a concept ship that aims to reduce CO2 emissions through the use of technologies available in 2030. The vessel is powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG), fuel cells, solar cells and wind power, all of which will lead to a reduction of CO2 by 69 percent per container carried, according to NYK.

The design features a bow-mounted bubble projector to reduce friction as the ship moves through the water and it is proposed that the vessel will actually break into segments in port so as to facilitate freight handling and thus aid efficiency. NYK also proposes to decrease the weight of the hull and therefore reduce water friction and the amount of power needed to propel the ship. A video about the ship will be shown to highlight the eco-friendly cargo vessel.

"The NYK Group will continue its efforts to develop measures to protect the environment by developing eco-friendly vessels and promoting energy-saving ship operations," NYK said.

The Japan pavilion is being set up under the theme "Our future is a tapestry of forest, village, and sea," and will emphasize the link that Japan has maintained with its lush forests, vibrant villages, and the ocean. In addition, actual events of last year's Great East Japan Earthquake will be depicted in a fictional theatrical presentation featuring an animated boy and his community overcoming a natural disaster.
