New Times Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. has carried out steel cutting on an 8,400-teu LNG dual-fuel container vessel being built for French shipping group CMA CGM, marking the formal start of construction.

The ceremony took place on 23 December at the yard’s facility in China and was attended by representatives from the shipbuilder, CMA CGM’s site team and classification society Lloyd’s Register.

The container vessel will be capable of operating on LNG as well as conventional marine fuels, reflecting the shipping industry's ongoing transition toward lower-emission propulsion systems.

New Times Shipbuilding explained that the steel cutting milestone signals the transition from design and preparation into physical construction, with steel plates now being processed and assembled into the hull structure.

The shipyard, based in Jiangsu province, is currently building a range of vessel types, including large bulk carriers, alongside its container ship programme.

No delivery date or contract value for the 8,400-teu vessel was disclosed in New Times Shipbuilding’s announcement.
