Total marine fuel sales in Singapore during 2021 remained ahead of the previous year up until the month of November, according to data by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA).

Accumulated volume of 45.811m tonnes for the first eleven months eclipsed the previous year's figure of 45.544m tonnes by 267,500 tonnes, or 0.6 percent, and was well above the pre-pandemic result of 42.998m tonnes recorded between January and November 2019.

This was despite monthly marine fuel volume at the Asian city-state declining slightly in November compared to 2020 by 40,900 tonnes, or 1.0 percent, to 4.222m tonnes, with less bunker calls being recorded.

The number of ships greater than 75 gross tonnes (gt) calling at Singapore for bunkers in November was 3,211 — representing a year-on-year (YoY) reduction of 148, or 4.4 percent, and a month-on-month (MoM) rise of 46 ships, or 1.45 percent.

The total number of vessels greater than 75 gt arriving in Singapore also dropped YoY — by 217, or 3 percent, to 7,130. Sequentially, November's figure was up by 32, or 0.45 percent.

Product sales

Sales of Singapore's best-selling product, VLSFO 380 centistoke (cSt), climbed marginally year-on-year (YoY) by 2,300 tonnes, or 0.1 percent, to 2.047m tonnes in November, whilst higher-sulphur MFO 380 recorded an annual growth of 94,600 tonnes, or 9.5 percent, to 1.09m tonnes.

VLSFO 100 cSt volume of 515,900 tonnes was lower by 82,000 tonnes, or 13.7 percent, compared to the prior-year period — continuing the negative YoY trend seen every month so far in 2021, except for October.

Sales of low-sulphur marine gas oil (MGO) also decreased YoY — by 19,600 tonnes, or 6.0 percent, to 304,900 tonnes.

Meanwhile, total rolling 3-month volume of 12.412m tonnes between September and November was the highest since April to June.
