Singapore records second-highest annual bunker sales


Marine fuel volume rose 5 percent to 49.833m tonnes in 2020.

Sales of marine fuel at the world's largest port by bunker supply volume, Singapore, rose by 2.37m tonnes, or 5.0 percent, to 49.833m tonnes in 2020, according to the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA).

The annual figure is the best since 2017 and the second-highest in the Asian city-state's history.

During a period of transition following the implementation of IMO's 0.5 percent global cap on sulphur content in January 2020, low-sulphur 380 centistoke (cSt) became Singapore's best-selling fuel grade last year with sales of 25.31m tonnes.

Higher-sulphur 380 cSt - the previous top seller - dropped to second as volume plummeted from 29.942m tonnes to 9.65m tonnes, whilst high-sulphur 500 cSt lost second place and slipped down the pecking order, nosediving 6.184m tonnes to just 942,600 tonnes.

Low-sulphur 100 cSt quickly emerged as Singapore's third most popular marine fuel product last year with sales of 7.642m tonnes - thus overtaking low-sulphur MGO, which recorded a year-on-year increase of 972,100 tonnes, or 31.5 percent, to 4.062m tonnes.
