Anglo-Eastern, an international ship management company, has completed its first pilot training course focused on ammonia as a marine fuel.

The course was delivered by the Anglo-Eastern Maritime Training Centre (AEMTC), the announcement said, and forms part of the company’s wider preparations for operating ammonia-fuelled ships. Anglo-Eastern confirmed the programme was completed in advance of an upcoming vessel takeover, although details of the ship and delivery timeline were not disclosed.

The two-day programme was held on 24–25 November and involved 26 participants drawn from a range of shipboard roles, including deck and engineering officers. Trainees travelled from across India to attend the course, with additional participation from Anglo-Eastern teams based in Australia and Delhi.

The training programme is designed to prepare seafarers for operating vessels powered by ammonia, an alternative fuel being developed as the maritime industry seeks to reduce carbon emissions.

“This pilot course is a logical and deliberate step as we prepare to take delivery of our first ammonia-fuelled ship,” said Aalok Sharma, Group Director of Training at Anglo-Eastern. “Our goal is to ensure that we continually learn while we teach, cultivating an environment of growth and innovation,” he added.

Ammonia is being developed as a potential marine fuel due to its carbon-free combustion characteristics, although challenges remain around safety, toxicity, and fuel handling. Several shipowners and equipment manufacturers are currently progressing ammonia-fuelled vessel projects, with early commercial deployments expected later this decade.
