American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), Eneos Corporation (Eneos) , Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK Line), and Seacor Holdings Inc. (Seacor) have launched a joint study to develop a methanol bunkering and supply-chain network along the US Gulf Coast.
The collaboration aims to lay the groundwork for what the companies describe as the first commercial-scale ship-to-ship methanol bunkering operations in the US. The initiative comes as the maritime sector assesses practical pathways toward net zero emissions, following targets set by the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
The partners said low-carbon methanol derived from renewable or bio-based sources is attracting growing interest as a marine fuel, citing its handling characteristics as a liquid at ambient temperature and pressure, as well as its potential to lower greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
Under the study, Eneos will examine sourcing and supply options for low-carbon methanol, including green methanol expected to be produced by C2X through the Beaver Lake Renewable Energy project in Louisiana. Eneosholds an equity stake in C2X and announced a $100m investment in the company alongside A.P. Møller Holding and A.P. Møller – Maersk in April 2025.
NYK Line will contribute technical expertise based on its experience in LNG bunkering, including input on the preparation and design requirements for methanol bunkering vessels.
Seacor will draw on its experience as a Jones Act-qualified owner and operator across US coastwise and inland waterways, alongside its design, engineering and construction capabilities, to support the development of bunkering assets.
ABS will provide classification and regulatory support for the project, including engagement with relevant authorities to address compliance requirements for methanol bunkering operations in the US.
The companies said the study is intended to support the development of a carbon-neutral future for the maritime industry by enabling safe and scalable methanol bunkering infrastructure.
