Bunker sales in Singapore rose by 7.7 percent in March 2011, according to data released by the
Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA).
Total sales at the world's leading bunker port were 3,520,700 tonnes in March, up 251,900 tonnes from 3,268,800 tonnes in February and 192,200 tonnes, or 5.8 percent, higher than the 3,328,500 tonnes sold during the corresponding month last year.
The result is the highest ever sales figure for the month of March and the sixth-highest monthly sales total in the port's history.
Combined with results over the previous two months it is also the first time in the port's history that bunker sales volumes have surpassed 10 million tonnes during the first quarter. The 9 million-tonne landmark sales figure was exceeded for the first time last year when combined results for the first three months reached 9,564,000 tonnes.
Sales of 380-centistoke (cst) - Singapore's largest-selling bunker grade - rose in March by 203,600 tonnes, or 8.0 percent, to 2,747,800 tonnes, up from 2,544,200 tonnes the previous month. In a comparison with the same month last year, bunker sales climbed 191,400 tonnes, or 7.5 percent to reach a new all-time record for March.
Meanwhile, sales of 500-cst - the port's second best-selling fuel grade - increased by 34,200 tonnes, or 7.8 percent, to 472,900 tonnes, up from 438,700 tonnes in February.
Significantly, in a comparison with the corresponding month last year, 500-cst volumes were 77,500 tonnes, or 19.6 percent, higher in March 2011. Sales of 1,391,900 tonnes for the first three months were 310,600 tonnes, or 28.7 percent, higher than the 1,081,300 tonnes recorded in the first quarter of 2010.
