Shell restarts Puget Sound refinery


West Coast refinery in restart mode following plant-wide shutdown.

Royal Dutch Shell Plc has restarted its bunker-producing Puget Sound refinery in Anacortes, Washington, following a plant-wide shutdown due to a boiler house upset.

The 145,000 barrel-per-day (bpd) facility was put in start-up mode on Friday after inspections were carried out overnight following a boiler system failure, which cut off steam needed for the refining of crude oil.

Shell said the incident took place at approximately 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, January 6th and required the refinery units to safely divert process products to the flare system.

"Refinery personnel conducted a safe and orderly shutdown of the refinery units. After a thorough inspection, the refinery is now in startup mode," Shell said in a statement on Friday.

The Puget Sound plant, which is located about 60 miles (97 kilometres) north of Seattle, is able to produce around 2,100 barrels of bunker fuel, 76,200 barrels of gasoline, 40,500 barrels of diesel fuel and 16,000 barrels of aviation fuel daily.
