Classification society RINA has granted ISCC EU certification to OLT Offshore LNG Toscana, enabling the operator to supply bio-LNG in line with European sustainability requirements.

The certification confirms that OLT meets the criteria set out under the EU Renewable Energy Directives (RED II and RED III), allowing bio-LNG handled through its infrastructure to qualify as a renewable fuel within the European market.

OLT Offshore LNG Toscana operates a floating regasification terminal in the Mediterranean, supporting the import and distribution of LNG and bio-LNG. With the certification in place, the terminal can now participate fully in certified bio-LNG supply chains across the region.

RINA, acting as an approved certification body under the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) framework, assessed OLT’s compliance across multiple sustainability criteria. These included land-use considerations, lifecycle greenhouse gas reductions, material traceability, and the use of waste-based feedstocks aligned with circular economy principles.

The classification society noted that these requirements are increasingly relevant to both the maritime and land transport sectors as they transition to lower-carbon fuels.

By obtaining ISCC EU certification, OLT strengthens its role in supporting the uptake of renewable fuels in Europe, particularly within the Mediterranean LNG market, where infrastructure capable of handling certified bio-LNG is becoming increasingly important.

Bio-LNG, produced from organic waste and biomass, is seen as a lower-carbon alternative to fossil-based LNG, provided it meets strict sustainability and traceability standards under EU regulations.
