Singapore sales dip 5.3 percent in August

Volume decline follows five consecutive months of record sales. Year-on-year sales up 10.2 percent.

Bunker sales in Singapore declined by 5.3 percent in August following five consecutive months of record sales figures, according to data released by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA).

Total sales at the world's leading bunker port were 3,375,000 tonnes in August, down 188,800 tonnes from 3,563,800 tonnes in July. However, the figure was 311,900 tonnes, or 10.2 percent, higher than sales of 3,063,100 tonnes achieved during the corresponding month last year.

Up until August 2010, Singapore's bunker sales record had been broken in five consecutive months between March and July. However, despite last month's volume dip, the figure was still the fifth highest in the port's history and sales have remained above 3.3 million tonnes for six months in a row.

Sales of 380-centistoke (cst) - Singapore's largest-selling bunker grade - fell by 189,900 tonnes, or 6.9 percent, in August to 2,545,700 tonnes from 2,735,600 tonnes the previous month. However, in a comparison with August 2009, bunker sales were up 163,700 tonnes, or 6.9 percent.

Meanwhile, sales of 500-cst - the port's second best-selling fuel grade - reached a new record of 491,200 tonnes, surpassing the previous record of 477,600 tonnes set in June and beating last month's sales volumes of 474,800 tonnes by 16,400 tonnes.

Significantly, in a comparison with the corresponding month last year, sales of 500-cst were 174,600 tonnes, or 55.1 percent, higher in August 2010.

Below are tables of bunker sales in Singapore for each fuel grade in 2010, 2009 and 2008 respectively with accumulated totals in the bottom row.
