Japan: ExxonMobil refineries fully operational


Oil major confirms that it has restored production at all of its refineries in Japan.

Exxon Mobil has confirmed that all of its refineries in Japan are now fully operational.

The oil major has restored all four of its Japan Group refineries following the earthquake and tsunami. "The units are running over and above their normal rates to meet the high demand for fuel," ExxonMobil said in a statement.

All or parts of the refinery units at Exxon Mobil Japan Group's 296,000 barrels-per-day (bpd) Kawasaki refinery, operated by its affiliate TonenGeneral, were shut down after the earthquake and the 172,000 bpd Chiba refinery, which Exxon runs in a joint venture with Mitsui.

ExxonMobil said that it had also opened the Shiogama terminal after the earthquake and tsunami severely damaged the facility.

The terminal received its first marine shipment of one million litres of gasoline and one million litres of kerosene, to be used for heating fuel, from the TonenGeneral Kawasaki refinery on March 22.

An ExxonMobil spokesperson said that the company's other two refineries - the 160,000 bpd Wakayama refinery and the 139,000 bpd Sakai refinery operated by TonenGeneral- had not been affected by the disaster in Japan.
