US shipper ups fuel surcharge

Shipping firm matches main rival and increases fuel fee by 4.75 percentage points.

Shipping firm Horizon Lines has announced that it is raising its bunker fuel surcharge for shipments between the US mainland and Hawaii, Guam/Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI).

Horizon, Hawaii's second-largest ocean shipper, will be matching its main rival Matson Navigation Co. and increasing its fuel surcharge to Hawaii by 4.75 percentage points to 26.5 percent from 21.75 percent.

The company will also raise its fuel surcharge for shipments between the US mainland and Guam/Northern Mariana Islands by 4.75 percentage points to 28 percent from 23.25 percent, matching Matson's increase.

Both surcharge increases will be effective from Sunday, February 27th - the same day that Matson's new rates are due to come into effect.

"Horizon Lines will continue to closely monitor fuel costs and will adjust the fuel surcharge as trends warrant," Horizon said in a statement.
