Bunker prices up in Europe

BIX MED and BIX NWE increase by more than $8 per tonne as prices rise in ports across the region.

Bunker prices rose in European ports on Wednesday as a consequence of the rise in crude oil prices yesterday and in early morning trading today.

Both the Bunker Index Med (BIX MED) - Bunker Index's average bunker price for ports in the Mediterranean - and the Bunker Index NWE (BIX NWE) - the average bunker price for ports in North West Europe - increased by more than US$8 per tonne today. The BIX MED jumped $8.86 to $593.78 per tonne, whilst the BIX NWE rose $8.23 to $559.74 per tonne.

In the Mediterranean, marine gasoil (MGO) prices recorded the most significant increases with the Bunker Index Med MGO (BIX MED MGO) - the average price for marine gasoil (high and low sulphur) in the Meditteranean - moving upwards by $15.73 to $742.73 per tonne.

Significant prices jumps were seen in a number of Mediterranean ports, with MGO prices rising by $15-$23 per tonne in Algeciras, Fos, Genoa, Gibraltar, Off Malta and Piraeus.

Meanwhile, average price levels for intermediate fuel oil (IFO) in the Mediterranean also increased today. The Bunker Index Med 380 CST (BIX MED 380 CST) - the average price for 380-centistoke (cst) in the region - rose by $7.22 to $495.83 per tonne, whilst the BIX MED 180 CST increased by $9.04 to $520.67 per tonne.

In North West Europe, the average price of 380-cst jumped $11.35 as the BIX NWE 380 CST recovered most of its losses from the previous two days to finish at $470.23 per tonne.

180-cst and MGO prices also rose on average by more than $10 per tonne today as the BIX NWE 180 CST recorded a $10.93 increase to $487.85 per tonne and the BIX NWE MGO was up $10.42 to $727.13 per tonne.

The BIX NWE MDO finished at $677.33 per tonne, up $7.89 from the previoius day.
