Belgian shipowner Exmar has taken delivery of Arlon, its second dual-fuel ammonia mid-sized gas carrier, at the HD Hyundai Heavy Industries shipyard in South Korea.

The vessel, which follows sister ship Antwerpen, will be owned by Exmar France and sail under the Belgian flag.

Arlon has a carrying capacity of up to 46,000 cbm of ammonia or LPG and is capable of operating on low-carbon ammonia as fuel. Exmar says the vessel can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 90% compared with conventional ships when fuelled by low-carbon ammonia, and that it meets or exceeds current International Maritime Organization (IMO) emissions reduction targets. The ability to use cargo as fuel is also intended to provide additional operational flexibility.

The vessel was built with the involvement of several partners, including HD Hyundai, HHI-EMD, Nord Gas Solutions, WinGD and Lloyd’s Register.

Named during a ceremony held on 9 April, Arlon is the second in a planned series of four ammonia dual-fuel midsize gas carriers, each named after a Belgian city.
