Total to stop production at Dunkirk refinery

Oil major will be halting refining operations in September due to weak refining market.

French oil major Total SA has said that it plans to stop production at its 160,000 barrels-per-day Dunkirk refinery in northern France for an unspecified period due to unfavourable market conditions.

The company is due to halt refining operations at the plant - also known by the names of Flandres and Mardyck - on Saturday September 12th, and the facility will be completely shut down from mid-September.

A company spokesperson said the closure was a 'cyclical measure' which would be temporary and that production would resume again 'when market conditions permit'.

Total has already halted a distillation unit at its 331,000-barrel-a-day Gonfreville refinery in Normandy due to weak refining margins and demand.
