Norwegian shipowner Østensjø Rederi has signed a contract with Spanish shipbuilder Astilleros Gondán for the construction of an offshore tug, with delivery scheduled for Q1 2028.

The vessel, based on a Skipsteknisk ST 933 design, will measure 50 metres in length with a 17-metre beam. According to Østensjø Rederi, the tug will be the largest and most powerful in the company's fleet.

The newbuild will feature a bollard pull of 150 tonnes and a DP-2 dynamic positioning system. The vessel will be equipped with a diesel-electric hybrid propulsion system and is prepared for methanol fuel operation.

Kristian Helland Vea, CEO of Østensjø Rederi, said: "The newbuild represents a major step in further strengthening our offshore towage fleet. Building on our extensive experience from tug operations, we have focused on developing a tug that delivers both the capacity and reliability required for offshore tug operations, meeting the demands of tomorrow."

He added: "This tug checks all the boxes, and the combination of high bollard pull, advanced hybrid propulsion, and large winch capacity ensures exceptional operational flexibility and capacity."

The vessel will accommodate 14 crew members across 10 single cabins and two double cabins. The design includes measures to reduce noise and vibration levels.

The tug will be fitted with a winch package designed to support complex offshore operations.

Østensjø Rederi stated that the methanol-ready capability aligns with the company's target of reducing emissions.

The contract continues a 20-year relationship between Østensjø Rederi and Astilleros Gondán for the construction of offshore vessels.
