Singapore sells 48.6 million tonnes of bunker fuel in 2016


Asian port sets new record as annual bunker sales increase by 7.7 percent.



Bunker sales in Singapore rose for the second consecutive year in 2016, according to preliminary estimates released by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA).

Accumulated bunker sales for the year were 48,614,300 tonnes, which represents an increase of 3,458,700 tonnes, or 7.7 percent, on the 45,155,600 tonnes sold in 2015. It is the highest figure in the port's history and more than double the amount that was sold just 12 years previously, in 2004.

Sales of 380 centistoke (cSt) - Singapore's largest-selling bunker grade - were up 2,001,100 tonnes, or 5.9 percent, to 36,107,900 tonnes in 2016 compared to the previous year. It beats the previous record of 34,122,100 tonnes set in 2011.

500 cSt volumes rose for the seventh consecutive year in 2016 to 9,801,100 tonnes. The figure was 1,202,300 tonnes, or 14.0 percent, higher than the 8,598,800 tonnes sold in 2015.

Volumes of 180 cSt were down for the sixth year in a row in 2016 with sales of 562,200 tonnes - down 111,300 tonnes, or 16.5 percent, on the 673,500 tonnes recorded during the previous 12-month period.

Standard marine gas oil (MGO) sales also decreased in 2016 as Asia's leading bunker port recorded sales of 853,500 tonnes, representing a fall of 82,600 tonnes, or 8.8 percent, compared to 2015.

Meanwhile, sales of low-sulphur MGO jumped to a record high of 1,136,700 tonnes, up 352,300 tonnes, or 44.9 percent, on last year's figure of 784,400 tonnes. In 2014, only 288,000 tonnes of low-sulphur MGO had been sold.
