Hyundai Heavy unveils world’s first gas engine package

Shipbuilder carries out demonstration test of an ME-GI dual fuel engine in combination with Hi-GAS.

Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI), the world’s biggest shipbuilder and a leading marine engine manufacturer, announced today that it has successfully carried out the world’s first full scale demonstration test of an ME-GI dual fuel engine in combination with Hi-GAS.

HHI’s independent LNG Fuel Gas Supply (FGSS), Hi-GAS system (Hyundai Integrated Gas Supply System) allows marine engines to use both diesel and LNG for fuel. According to HHI, ships equipped with the system achieve improved performance and reduced emissions.

The Hi-Gas system can be used in all types of vessel such as LNG carriers, containerships, and oil tankers, the shipbuilder said, adding that the system can meet stricter IMO environmental regulations.

The International Maritime Organization (IMO)'s regulations on sulphur will come into force on 1 January 2015. In line with the Annex VI of the MARPOL Convention, the limits for the sulphur content of marine fuels used in designated SO2 Emission Control Areas (SECAs) will be 1% until 31 December 2014 and 0.1% as from 1 January 2015.

In a statement, HHI said that in January 2015 "the market for the LNG FGSS will be extended to all over the world".

Mr. Lee Tae-young, vice president of HHI’s Engine and Machinery Division commented: "There are numerous inquiries regarding the FGSS. This FGSS will give us marketing leverage for new shipbuilding order as IMO regulations begin in earnest."
