Zim to introduce low sulphur fuel surcharge

Surcharge to be implemented as a result of higher fuel costs following the introduction of the North American ECA.

Israel's largest cargo shipping company, Zim Integrated Shipping Services Ltd., has announced that it will be introducing a low sulphur fuel surcharge of $2 per twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU) next month as a result of higher bunker costs.

In a statement, the company said: "The charge is applied in order to cover the increased fuel costs, incurred due to the decision by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to apply stricter controls on emissions for ships sailing off the coasts of Canada and the United States."

The new North American Emissions Control Area (ECA), which came into effect on August 1 2012, requires ships travelling in the ECA zone within 200 miles of the U.S. and Canada coasts to burn higher-priced 1% sulphur fuel, below the current global limit of 3.5%.

Zim's low sulphur surcharge will apply to trade between North Europe/Mediterranean and North America in both directions and will be effective from Wednesday, September 15 2012.
