French container shipping group CMA CGM has carried out what it describes as the world’s largest single-batch biomethanol bunkering operation, loading 8,016 tonnes of the alternative fuel onto its vessel CMA CGM Osmium at Shanghai Port.

The operation was conducted in partnership with Shanghai Electric Group Co., Ltd. and Shanghai International Port (Group) Co., Ltd., and, according to CMA CGM, the volume bunkered is sufficient to cover the vessel’s entire voyage from Shanghai to the East Coast of South America.

The ocean carrier noted in an online post that the operation is expected to deliver an emissions reduction equivalent to 10,000 tonnes of CO₂.

Named during a ceremony held on 23 February 2026, CMA CGM Osmium is a 13,000-TEU dual-fuel methanol container ship that was initially deployed on the company’s M2X service, also known as the Mexico Express, operating on a loop between East Asia and Mexico. The M2X service was subsequently withdrawn as a separate loop from June 2026, folding the Mexican calls into the revised ACSA1 service. The vessel has since been reassigned to the SEAS 2 service, connecting Asia and the east coast of South America.

The boxship forms part of CMA CGM’s fleet development programme, which the group says supports its Net Zero Carbon 2050 objective.
