EU shipping emissions fall 2.1 percent

Newly-published report shows that CO2 emissions from maritime transport dropped by 2.1 percent year-on-year.

The EU Federation for Transport and the Environment has this week issued its report on a survey of shipping emissions in EU27 countries and the impact of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions on the environment, which shows that shipping emissions fell by over 2 percent in 2008.

The study says that between 1990 and 2008, transport emissions increased by 34 percent from 941,631 kt of CO2 to 1,257,936 kt of CO2, whilst emissions from other sectors decreased by 13.6 percent from 3,632,043 kt of CO2 to 3,138,104.

During the same period shipping emissions rose by 61030 kt of CO2, or 56 percent, from 108,553 kt of CO2 to 169,583 kt of CO2. The GHGs measured specifically focused on CO2, due to the variance in other GHGs.

In 2008, the study showed that emissions from international maritime transport decreased by 2.1 percent compared with the previous year. Average annual emission growth from shipping since 1990 has been 2.5 percent.

Please find a summary table below of CO2 emissions in EU27 countries between 1990 and 2008.
