Agreement to manufacture shore power system


Partnership to convert cold ironing system to support the global 50Hz market.



Industrial manufacturer Eaton Corporation has announced that it is collaborating with Cochran Marine to reduce cruise ship emissions and provide cleaner air quality in ports around the world.

With this agreement, Eaton is the exclusive manufacturer of Cochran's automated shore power system for cruise ship vessels. Working together, Eaton and Cochran are converting Cochran's 60 Hertz (Hz) solution to support the global 50Hz market, which will allow this team to install turn-key marine shore power at cruise ship terminals around the world. Eaton is providing manufacturing, engineering services and overseas turnkey project management capabilities.

"To address the increasing concern over air quality in ports, Eaton provides a spectrum of solutions designed to reduce energy consumption and leave a smaller footprint on the environment. Providing Marine Shore Power is a significant addition to Eaton's portfolio of electric transportation solutions."

Cochran's Marine Shore Power system resides on the ship dock and allows equipped vessels to connect to electrical power through a closed transition process while in port. Without powering down or turning off the lights, ship operators are able to turn off their engines and reduce carbon emissions by up to 87 tons at each port stop, according to Cohran.

"Marine shore power is a critical step toward clean energy for docked ships and furthers efforts to reduce emissions and improve air quality."

Cochran's Marine Shore Power system has already been installed at ports in Seattle, Vancouver, San Francisco and San Diego. Another installation is also underway in Long Beach.

Eaton has a 40-year history of supplying the marine and offshore industry with power protection solutions. Other critical power applications using Eaton UPS units include hospitals, data centers and airports.
