Harley Marine cuts NY emissions

Bunker transportation firm says it is actively reducing emissions in New York Harbor.

Harley Marine NY, a subsidiary company of Harley Marine Services, Inc. says it is actively reducing emissions in New York Harbor.

Tugboat HMS Liberty, which is part of the Harley Marine NY Fleet, was repowered at Feeney Shipyard in Kingston, New York. During the repower, the 1970's vintage Detroit 149 Series engines and 3-71 generator sets were replaced with new, EPA Tier II Compliant, Cummins QSK38 engines and John Deere powered generator sets.

Replacing the older engines and generators on the tug will reduce NoX and particulate emissions in the New York Harbor by 40 tons per year. This will also result in fuel savings as the newer equipment will be more efficient.

The project was backed and supported by the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey, and they have extended a grant to relieve some of the financial constraints to Harley Marine NY.

"Harley Marine Services commends both ports for being forward thinking and partners in this process. The conversion is part of Harley Marine Services’ environmental management system program to continually lessen its environmental footprint and support a “green” operation throughout its family of companies," Harley Marine said in a statement.

Commenting on the project, John Walls, General Manager of Harley Marine said “HMNY and its charter partner, Chemoil, appreciated the opportunity to work with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey in improving the air quality of the harbor. It is a winning combination for all stakeholders."
