The International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) has released a Deck Procedures Guide, according to the organisation, completing a set of three operational guidance publications for shipboard departments.
The guide provides structured procedures for deck operations across all vessel types, including cargo handling, mooring and anchoring, bunkering, heavy-weather preparation, and maintenance of essential equipment. It also includes guidance on compliance with the International Maritime Solid Bulk Cargoes (IMSBC) Code and the International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG) Code, supported by adaptable checklists and an interactive risk assessment tool.
One chapter focuses on alternative fuel bunkering, including LNG, methanol, and ammonia. This section was developed in collaboration with operators and reviewed by the Society for Gas as Marine Fuel (SGMF).
John Stawpert, Principal Director - Marine, ICS, said: "Deck operations are fundamental to ship safety, and crews need clear, validated procedures for every scenario they face. This guide delivers that comprehensive knowledge, from traditional practices to new considerations such as alternative fuels, helping crews operate confidently while maintaining the highest safety standards."
The guide was developed following a review process involving Swire Shipping, Anglo-Eastern Univan Group, the Japanese Shipowners’ Association, MISC Group, Intercargo and CLIA.
ICS said the publication is intended for masters, chief officers, deck officers, bosuns and other deck crew, as well as engineering officers responsible for deck machinery and personnel involved in bunkering operations. It recommends that a copy be carried on board every ship.
The guide is also aimed at ship superintendents, technical and HSEQ managers, shoreside safety teams, training institutions, terminal operators and organisations transitioning to alternative fuel operations.
Emily Yates, Commercial Director, ICS, commented: "Every onboard department needs to work together to ensure the safety and security of the crew, ship, environment and cargo. The Deck Procedures Guide complements the Bridge and Engine Room Procedures Guides, creating a harmonised set of resources that uphold best practice across ship operations."
ICS said the publication is intended as an international alternative to region-specific guidance, aiming to reduce deck deficiencies and improve safety standards and port state control outcomes.
The Deck Procedures Guide is available via the ICS website.
