The Port of Algeciras has reported record LNG bunkering volumes, according to the port authority.

The Spanish port said it supplied 333,833 cbm of LNG to ships in the Bay of Algeciras through 78 ship-to-ship operations during 2025. Citing Gasnam data, the port authority said this made Algeciras Europe’s third-largest LNG bunkering port, behind Rotterdam and Marseille Fos.

The port also said it had become the world’s leading supplier of bio-LNG, having delivered 51,923 cbm of renewable-origin LNG, noting that the volume represents emissions reductions equivalent to the annual carbon capture of 9,000 mature trees.

The bunkering operations were carried out by Axpo Iberia, Shell and Peninsula, while Enagás was credited with helping connect biogas production with demand.

Across the Iberian Peninsula, nine barges are currently able to supply LNG, with a further four under construction, the port said. Of those, five are positioned at the Port of Algeciras to serve container ships, ferries and car carriers that have sharply increased their LNG consumption at Spanish ports.

The port authority described Algeciras as the leading green energy hub in southern Europe, backed by these LNG supply volumes.

LNG has emerged as a transition fuel for shipping as the sector seeks to reduce emissions ahead of tighter environmental rules. Bio-LNG, produced from renewable feedstocks, offers further emissions reductions compared with fossil-derived LNG, although global availability remains limited.
