Japanese classification society Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (ClassNK) has agreed to collaborate with GTT Training Ltd to provide specialised training courses on alternative fuels through the ClassNK Academy.

GTT Training, a subsidiary of French technology group GTT, specialises in training professionals in the LNG and future fuels industry. GTT develops cryogenic membrane containment systems for transporting low and zero-carbon fuels, including LNG, with its solutions adopted by many LNG ships and floating facilities.

Under the partnership, ClassNK will invite lecturers from GTT Training to deliver courses focusing on alternative fuels, particularly LNG. The collaboration aims to help maritime professionals acquire knowledge and practical skills for the safe and efficient handling of alternative fuels.

As the first step, ClassNK will offer the course "LNG, Ammonia, Methanol and Hydrogen: An Introduction" from GTT Training's programmes. The course introduces various new types of marine fuels being considered in the shipping industry, with a focus on their characteristics, hazards, and practical safety considerations.

The ClassNK Academy was established to provide the maritime industry with a working knowledge of shipping and shipbuilding, with a specific focus on surveys, inspections, and ship management. Various courses are offered through group training and e-learning.

ClassNK stated that it will continue to offer educational and training opportunities to support the decarbonization and safety improvement of the maritime industry.

Course details and applications are available on the ClassNK Academy website at academy.classnk.or.jp.
