Global bunker average falls $43 in May


BIX monthly average declines to its lowest level of the year so far in May.



The average monthly Bunker Index (BIX) price plummeted $43.51 per tonne, or 4.9 percent, in May compared to the previous month, according to Bunker Index price data.

The BIX global monthly average fell to $845.54 per tonne last month, down from $889.05 per tonne in April. It is the lowest price of the year so far and the most significant monthly price change since April 2011, when the global average climbed $46.40 to reach $846.65 per tonne.

In a comparison with the corresponding month last year, May 2012 was $23.46 per tonne, or 2.9 percent, higher than the $822.08 average price recorded in May 2011.
