China Classification Society (CCS) has released its 'Report of China Sustainable Shipping Fuel Development 2025,' examining the global transition to alternative marine fuels as the shipping industry pursues net-zero emissions targets.
The report was unveiled at the North Bund Forum in Shanghai, on October 20, following an analysis of domestic and international greenhouse gas reduction policies and current sustainable marine fuel industry trends.
The classification society says it conducted an in-depth examination of the global and Chinese sustainable shipping fuel sectors, covering production, storage, transportation, refuelling, and application aspects of the fuel supply chain.
The 2025 report is structured across three sections. The first outlines global greenhouse gas reduction policies and regulations while providing analysis of sustainable shipping fuels, including their core concepts and development trends.
The second section examines the entire industrial chain from production and storage to transportation, port refuelling, and marine applications. It covers the development of green hydrogen, green methane, green methanol, green ammonia, and biofuels on a global scale.
The final section focuses on China's domestic landscape, assessing current status, future prospects, and challenges within the country's sustainable shipping fuel industry. The report offers recommendations across three strategic levels: national policy frameworks, fuel manufacturers, and the shipping sector.
CCS says the report will act as a reference point for industrial policy formulation, technology route selection, fuel layout planning, and the construction of port storage and refuelling facilities, adding that the document will also support the advancement of supply chain technology and help ensure the safe application and development of sustainable marine fuels.
