Bunker supplier Peninsula has announced the expansion of its physical supply operations to Algoa Bay, South Africa, in partnership with local logistics service provider Linsen Nambi.
The move follows Peninsula's expansion in Mauritius and Egypt, as well as its reselling portfolio across Africa. From October, the company will deliver bunkering services for high-sulphur fuel oil (HSFO) and very-low-sulphur fuel oil (VLSFO) from the bay.
Port Elizabeth and Coega Port are located within Algoa Bay on South Africa's southeastern coast, positioned along international shipping routes.
John A. Bassadone, CEO at Peninsula, said: "Our expansion into Algoa Bay is testament to our commitment to providing consistent product availability and optionality to our global customer network. Linsen Nambi's local expertise has been invaluable as we prepare to launch the operations, and we look forward to continued collaboration that paves the way for increased activity in South Africa."
Guillermo Cancela, Regional Supply Manager for the Middle East and Africa at Peninsula, noted that Algoa Bay enables vessels to bunker without berthing, reducing waiting times and costs. He added: "Together with our established presence in Mauritius, Algoa Bay allows us to create operational synergies across both markets. By making key fuels available at these locations, we are opening doors for new opportunities and providing a reliable service to customers across the continent."
The launch follows collaboration with local stakeholders to reestablish the region's bunkering activities ,in line with new regulation protocols, to provide more options for ship operators working in the region.
Durand Naidoo, CEO at Linsen Nambi, said: "Peninsula's entry into this market is a strong vote of confidence in the South African bunker industry and highlights its long-term potential. The growth of Algoa Bay as a bunkering destination benefits the region and strengthens South Africa's role in global shipping."
Linsen Nambi has been operating at South African ports since 2008, with over 22,000 bunker fuel deliveries and more than 12 million tonnes of fuel supplied. The company operates a fleet of bunker tankers with over 120 permanent employees and holds ISM and ISO14001 accreditations.
Peninsula operates as both a physical distributor and reseller of marine fuel, with offices and operations in ports globally. The company supplies conventional fuel as well as alternative fuels and is investing in zero-carbon fuels including ammonia and methanol.
