China's Huatai Insurance Agency has issued an update on fuel sulphur content regulations in the Yangtze River Delta Emission Control Area (ECA) which are due to become effective from next month.

The update follows a recent notification by the Maritime Safety Administration (MSA) of Jiangsu Province, and also covers those previously made by Yangtze River Delta's other two MSA's: Shanghai and Zhejiang.

As from October 1, ships will be required to use low-sulphur fuel with a maximum sulphur content of 0.5 percent:

- when entering the Jiangsu ports of Nantong or Suzhou;

- when entering Shanghai port area;

- when entering the Yangtze River Delta ECA if the ship's destination is either of the two key ports of Zhejiang: Ningbo or Zhoushan.

From October 1, ships shall prioritize the use of shore power if they are equipped to do so.

Furthermore, between October 29 and November 11, ships equipped to use shore power shall do so when berthing at a terminal with cold ironing facilities at the Jiangsu ports of Changzhou, Nantong, Suzhou or Wuxi.
