Fincantieri launches fuel-efficient cruise ship with scrubber


Viking Jupiter is sixth in a series of vessels for Viking Ocean Cruises.

The Viking Jupiter was launched on May 10, 2018, at a ceremony in Ancona, Italy. It is scheduled to be delivered in 2019.

Shipbuilder Fincantieri officially launched the Viking Jupiter on Thursday - the sixth in a series of vessels for Viking Ocean Cruises, the subsidiary of Viking Cruises.

The project will now move onto the interior design phase, with delivery scheduled for 2019.

The new series of ships feature fuel-efficient engines and an exhaust gas cleaning system, or scrubber, to meet environmental regulations.

Fincantieri has so far delivered four vessels to Viking Ocean Cruises. The first of the series, Viking Star, was built in Marghera and delivered in 2015; the second and the third, Viking Sea and Viking Sky, took to the sea from the Ancona shipyard in 2016 and 2017 respectively, whilst the Viking Sun was the last to be delivered in September.

The fifth unit, Viking Orion, is scheduled to be completed in a few weeks.

Another 10 units, including the one launched today, are due to take to the sea between 2019 and 2027.
