Fuel management firm selects tech partner

Norwegian technology selected for fuel efficiency and emission reduction solutions.

Norwegian firm Hatteland Display has announced that it has been selected by energy management specialist Marorka to provide the marine displays and computers for its onboard fuel efficiency and emission reduction solutions.

The news of Hatteland's Display's latest 'green' partnership follows the announcement at SMM 2008 that the company would be providing the displays and computers for the control systems of the innovative SkySails wind propulsion system.

"We provide displays and computers across the whole spectrum, from navigation and automation through to the naval C4 and ops room environment. We're particularly pleased to be working with Marorka though, as its work not only enables fuel savings, but also helps the environment, which can only be a good thing," enthused Knut Vidar Lauritsen, President, Hatteland Display.

Commenting on the recent increase in the development of energy management systems for the monitoring of engine performance, Hatteland said: "Engine performance is currently a hot topic in the shipping world. By using sophisticated energy management systems it's actually possible to save a significant amount of fuel on any given trip if the engines are used correctly, so there is a whole fledgling industry dedicated to providing systems for engine performance monitoring."

Iceland-based Marorka is recognised for its contribution to the environment, having recently been awarded the Nordic Council's Nature and Environment Prize 2008.

The Marorka Maren Marine Energy Management System(MEMS) is equipped with operational optimisation, simulation-based decision support, extensive energy analysis tools and energy controlling features. Ultimately, Maren is a comprehensive energy management system designed to maximize energy efficiency and thereby reduce operating costs.

The Marorka Fuel Manager is a fuel management system that is compatible with MEMS. It keeps track of fuel consumption and gives the crew a snapshot overview over the fuel consumption.

"It is just as important for developers of these new green solutions to provide their customers with high quality, reliable and functional hardware as it is for our customers developing more mainstream applications. They turn to us for displays and computers because they know that Hatteland Display products can offer the quality and reliability to ensure confidence in high system availability," concluded Lauritsen.
