Singapore: Record bunker sales in August

Bunker sales skyrocket to their highest ever level at the world's leading bunker port.

Bunker sales in Singapore rose to an all-time high during the month of August, according to data released by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA).

Total sales at the world's leading bunker port skyrocketed last month by 502,500 tonnes, or 13.3 percent, to 4,287,800 tonnes, up from 3,785,300 tonnes in July. The figure shatters the previous record of 3,985,700 tonnes - recorded in May 2012 - by 302,100 tonnes, or 7.6 percent. The 502,500-tonne increase is also the most significant month-on-month rise in 16 months - since April 2015.

In comparison with previous years, last month's figure is the highest ever recorded for the month of August - beating the 3,668,800 tonnes sold in August 2014, the 3,488,100-tonne figure for August 2013, the 3,556,000 tonnes recorded in August 2012 and the 3,815,300 tonnes sold in July 2011.

Compared to last year, volumes were up by 619,000 tonnes, or 16.9 percent; it is the biggest year-on-year increase since Bunker Index began recording Singapore bunker volumes in 2008. It is also the seventh year-on-year rise of 2015, with only April recording a year-on-year decline.

Accumulated bunker sales for the year so far are 29,635,800 tonnes, which represents an increase of 1,460,000 tonnes, or 5.2 percent, compared to the first eight months of 2014 (28,175,800 tonnes).

In fact, the figure is the highest ever recorded for the first eight months - also above the volumes sold during the corresponding period in 2013 (28,115,600 tonnes), 2012 (28,949,200 tonnes), 2011 (28,619,700 tonnes) and 2010 (26,959,600 tonnes).

Sales of 380 centistoke (cSt) - Singapore's best-selling bunker grade - rose by 389,200 tonnes, or 13.4 percent in August to 3,295,600 tonnes. It is the highest 380 cSt sales figure ever recorded - beating the previous record of 3,144,600 tonnes in May 2012.

In comparison with the corresponding month last year, 380 cSt sales were up by 558,900 tonnes, or 20.4 percent. This is the biggest year-on-year increase since Bunker Index began recording monthly Singapore volume data in 2008.

500 cSt volumes also rose to their highest ever level in August, with sales of 774,800 tonnes. The figure is 92,900 tonnes, or 13.6 percent, higher than the previous month's figure of 681,900 tonnes. It is the biggest month-on-month increase since April 2014. Last month's result is also 46,700 tonnes, or 6.4 percent higher than in August 2014.

Below are tables of bunker sales in Singapore for each fuel grade in 2015, 2014, 2013, 2012 and 2011 with accumulated totals in the bottom row.
