Discrepancy in MPA annual bunker figures

MPA releases two annual bunker sales estimates - 42,682,200 tonnes and 42.5 million tonnes.

Accumulated annual bunker sales volumes released by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) are above those announced by the MPA last week at the Singapore Maritime Foundation New Year cocktail reception.

The preliminary estimates released by the MPA show that annual bunker sales were 42,682.2 million tonnes - just 3,100 tonnes lower than the previous year - whilst the figure announced at last week's Maritime Foundation event, and also published online by the MPA, was 42.5 million tonnes.

The MPA data released therefore shows that bunker sales were lower in 2013 compared to the previous year, however it is unclear as to whether the decline was 3,100 tonnes or 185,300 tonnes on the 42,685,300 tonnes sold in 2012.

Meanwhile, monthly volume data shows that total sales in December rose by 429,300 tonnes, or 12.7 percent, to 3,802,400 tonnes, up from 3,373,100 tonnes in November. It is the highest level since May 2012.

Sales of 380 centistoke (cst) - Singapore's largest-selling bunker grade - jumped 392,800 tonnes, or 15.6 percent, in December to 2,917,800 tonnes - the highest figure since January. In comparison with the corresponding month last year, sales were up 74,200 tonnes, or 2.6 percent.

500 cst volumes were up by just 2,000 tonnes, or 0.3 percent, to 654,200 tonnes compared to the previous month. The result is 112,800 tonnes, or 20.8 percent, higher than in December 2012.

Below are tables of bunker sales in Singapore for each fuel grade in 2013, 2012 and 2011 with accumulated totals in the bottom row.
