'Fuel-saving' monitoring system launched

New system is said to deliver fuel savings of more than five percent.

Leading ECDIS (Electronic Chart Display and Information System) manufacturer Transas Marine has launched its fuel efficiency monitoring system Transas Wave. Designed for commercial shipping, the new system is being marketed as a solution for saving fuel and reducing environmental impact.

Transas Wave is designed to provide ship officers with a simple tool for monitoring and recording a ship's fuel consumption. The system is a standalone application that is said to fit on every type of ship.

Transas Wave connects to navigation sensors, flow meter, engine data and emission sensors to collect information, which is then used to optimize the operation of a vessel. With proper control and management Transas Marine says it is possible to improve engine efficiency, thereby delivering fuel savings and reducing emissions.

"The product provides online decision support where instantaneous as well as consumption per sailed distance is presented in a clear and easy way. Just making small changes to speed, trim and planned route, can lead to significant fuel savings. Wave includes these, plus a range of additional parameters that can lead to fuel savings of more than 5 percent," Transas Marine said in a statement.

Commenting on the environmental credentials of Transas Wave, Anders Rydlinger, Transas Marine Navigation Product Development Director, said: "Change to a 'green' mindset is important. At Transas we demonstrate commitment to protecting the environment. Wave continues this concept and moves Transas to the very forefront of fuel-saving technology, making sure that our customers stay ahead of the wave."

Integration with ECDIS for route optimization will be available later this year together with the ECO module, which is designed to comply with new MARPOL requirements, allowing recording and monitoring of a vessel emissions.
