OW launches bunker tool

New OW Bunker app contains ISO8217-2010 fuel standards data and a fuel calculator.

OW Bunker, one of the world’s leading suppliers and traders of marine fuel, has today announced the launch of an application for the Apple iPhone and iPod Touch.

The app, which can be downloaded for free from Apple’s App store, contains ISO8217-2010 fuel standards data and a fuel calculator. Additional features are due to be launched soon, the company says.

"With quality such an important element within shipping, OW Bunker’s app is an invaluable tool for ship owners and operators, or anyone within the industry that needs to know the very latest fuel standards and characteristics of marine fuel, particularly those involved in the procurement, delivery, handling or management of bunkers," OW Bunker said.

As well as ISO8217-2010 standards for residual and distillate marine fuel, the app contains a fuel calculator that allows the user to calculate Specific Energy content, the CCAI (Calculated Carbon Aromatic Index) Number, the Viscosity Index and the Volume Correction Factor (VCF).

OW Bunker points out that all four calculations are essential for those working with marine fuels. Using Specific Energy as an example, OW Bunker said: "Specific Energy is important for the economical operation of a vessel and CCAI is particularly relevant for medium speed engines, as even ISO8217-compliant fuel can cause difficulties if the CCAI - the ignition properties of the fuel - is too high."

Commenting on the tool, Søren Christian Meyer, Global Sales Director for OW Bunker, said: “The launch of our first app for the iPhone and iPod Touch is just one way in which OW Bunker is embracing modern technology as part of our industry-leading approach to innovation and our drive for ever higher standards of customer service. We are pleased to be the world’s first marine fuel supplier to offer this tool. Customers are already telling us how helpful they find it to have ISO 8217 data and our fuel calculator at their finger tips, wherever they are, and we will soon be adding even more features.”
