Taranto refinery shuts for maintenance

Eni confirms closure of Taranto facility as maintenance date is brought forward.

Leading oil and gas company Eni S.p.A. has confirmed that it has shut its 90,000 barrels-per-day refinery in Taranto, southern Italy.

The company said that the plant would be closed for 30 days from Thursday 17th December in order to carry out maintenance at the plant.

"Given an excess of production at the Taranto refinery, it was decided to use this occasion and bring forward next year's ordinary maintenance. The shutdown is for 30 days and starts today," an Eni spokesperson said yesterday to media sources.

Eni is the leading supplier of marine fuel and lubrcants at the port of Taranto. It is currently unclear how the refinery shutdown will affect the availability of product for the marine market over the next month.

The southern port's other leading bunker company is Basile Petroli S.p.A, which supplies marine gasoil (MGO) by road tank wagon at Taranto as well as acting as a trader in other Italian ports.

The company has been active in the oil business since it was founded in 1951, running a network of gasoline retail stations and setting up its bunker department in 2000. Basile Petroli also also has its own 1,000 cubic metre storage facility at Taranto.
