Singapore: Accumulated bunker sales up year-on-year

Sales volumes remain higher than in 2008 despite 7.8 decline during the month of April.

Accumulated bunker sales volumes in Singapore remain higher than in 2008 despite a 7.8 percent decline during the month of April, according to data released by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA).

Total sales of marine fuel at the world's leading bunker port dropped by 244,900 tonnes to 2,884,800 tonnes last month from 3,129,700 tonnes in March, representing a decrease of 7.8 percent.

The figure was also 162,200 tonnes lower than in April 2008, when the monthly total reached 3,047,000 tonnes.

However, accumulated sales for the year so far have now reached 11,704,200 tonnes compared to 11,628,500 during the first four months of 2008, representing an increase of 75,700 tonnes, or 0.65 percent, despite the economic downturn.

Sales of 380-centistoke (cst) - Singapore's largest-selling bunker grade - fell by 189,100 tonnes last month compared to March 2009, reaching 2,884,800 tonnes. In a comparison with April 2008, sales volumes were 162,200 tonnes lower.

Meanwhile sales of 500-cst - the second-best selling product in Singapore - increased in April 2009 compared to the previous month. Volumes sold were 276,400 tonnes versus 250,500 tonnes in March, a rise of 25,900 tonnes, or 10.3 percent. However, the figure was 79,100 tonnes, or 22.3 percent, lower than in April 2008 when 355,500 tonnes were sold.

The most significant decline in percentage terms was for 180-cst, which recorded a drop in sales volume of 54,800 tonnes, or 25.4 percent, to 161,000 tonnes in April 2009 versus 215,800 tonnes the previous month. In a comparison with sales of 246,600 tonnes in April 2008, the figure was 85,600 tonnes, or 34.7 percent lower.

Marine gas oil (MGO) volumes in April fell by 20,500 tonnes compared to March 2009, but were 1,400 tonnes higher than during the same month last year.

Below is a table of bunker sales in Singapore for each fuel grade in 2009 and 2008.
