Envision, a Chinese green technology group, has supplied green ammonia for the bunkering of the Terra Clove, described as the world's first very large ammonia carrier (VLAC) fitted with dual-fuel ammonia propulsion.
The vessel is owned by Eastern Pacific Shipping (EPS) and was built by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) in South Korea, where it was recently delivered at a ceremony held at HD Hyundai Heavy Industries' (HHI) yard in Ulsan, South Korea, on 22 October.
The bunkering follows Envision's first commercial green ammonia shipment in February, when green ammonia was delivered from Chifeng to LOTTE Fine Chemical at Ulsan Port in South Korea, with the delivery described by Envision as the world's first end-to-end commercial shipment of green ammonia from renewable hydrogen synthesis to international maritime logistics.
With the latest supply to the VLAC, Envision said it has again linked production, transportation and downstream marine fuel application within its ammonia value chain.
The green ammonia comes from Envision's Chifeng Green Hydrogen and Ammonia Industrial Park in Inner Mongolia, which the company said currently produces 320,000 tonnes of green ammonia a year, with a planned total capacity of 1.52m tonnes. Envision noted that the Chifeng facility is certified by Bureau Veritas to ISO standards, and that the green ammonia complies with renewable fuels of non-biological origin (RFNBO) and International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) requirements.
Frank Yu, senior vice president of Envision Energy, commented: "Building on our first shipment to LOTTE Fine Chemical in February, this bunkering marks a historic milestone: we have officially connected the entire green ammonia value chain — from production to marine application to a larger scale. The deployment to this first-in-kind VLAC powered by the ammonia dual-fuel Everllence engine is a breakthrough, confirming that green ammonia is a viable, scalable marine fuel today. We are incredibly proud to partner with forward-thinking leaders like EPS and LOTTE Fine Chemical to make this a reality and look forward to driving the global maritime industry toward net-zero."
