Coast Guard oversees fuel removal

Diesel fuel removed from vessel grounded off US East Coast.

U.S Coast Guard on-scene coordinators have overseen the completion of the removal of diesel fuel from the Makayla and Noah, which ran aground in Pea Island Wildlife Refuge south of Oregon Inlet, North Carolina on Saturday.

IMS Environmental Services, the company the Coast Guard contracted to perform the removal, completed removing 350 gallons of diesel fuel and other pollutants from the 55-foot catamaran.

The Makayla & Noah drifted from anchor onto the beach at the refuge south of Oregon Inlet early Thursday morning after the Coast Guard rescued the vessel operator late Wednesday. Efforts to remove the potential pollution had been in progress since Thursday night.
