Port of Rotterdam Authority, in conjunction with other entities, is launching a trial project that allows users to submit digital bunkering announcements.

The online app is intended to replace the existing VHF announcements system and is the first step towards paperless bunkering as the port aims to improve efficiency.

Currently in Rotterdam, there are approximately 20,000 bunkering operations every year - equivalent to 20,000 VHF notifications. And the details for each of these operations are entered into various systems by hand.

In the pilot project, companies refuelling in Rotterdam will instead be required to notify the port authority online prior to bunkering - rather than via VHF.

The online submission of notifications is set to largely automate the announcement process - resulting in greater efficiency, less room for human error, and improved reliability of the data.

Additionally, the new app features a link to the customs administration's Maritime Single Window, meaning that bunkering parties will only be required to submit one bunkering announcement, rather than two - thus improving the efficiency of the current procedure.

The pilot project is being launched in collaboration with VT Group, Unibarge, Titan LNG, FTS Hoftrans and Transnational Blenders.

"Other bunker fuel suppliers are also welcome to participate in the trial," Port of Rotterdam Authority said.
