Singapore records second-highest October sales as 500 cSt volumes nosedive

Month-on-month sales were 5.5 percent lower, but Asian port remains on course to set new record in 2015.

Bunker sales in Singapore fell for the second consecutive month in October, according to data released by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA).

Total sales at the world's leading bunker port declined last month by 210,700 tonnes, or 5.5 percent, to 3,637,000 tonnes, down from 3,847,700 tonnes in September. The 210,700-tonne month-on-month decrease is the fourth of 2015 and the third-most significant of the year so far.

In comparison with previous years, last month's figure is the second-highest ever recorded for the month of October, surpassed only by the 3,780,600 tonnes seen in October 2013. It beats the 3,593,600 tonnes sold in October 2014, the 3,508,400 tonnes recorded in October 2012, the 3,546,200 tonnes sold in October 2011 and the 3,556,100-tonne figure seen in October 2010

Compared to last year, volumes were up by 43,400 tonnes, or 1.2 percent. It is also the ninth year-on-year rise of 2015, with only April recording a year-on-year decline.

Accumulated bunker sales for the year so far are 37,120,500 tonnes, which represents an increase of 1,829,600 tonnes, or 5.2 percent, compared to the first 10 months of 2014 (35,290,900 tonnes). In fact, the figure is the highest ever recorded for the first ten months - also above the volumes sold during the corresponding period in 2013 (35,506,700 tonnes), 2012 (35,784,000 tonnes), 2011 (35,734,300 tonnes) and 2010 (34,069,400 tonnes).

Sales of 380 centistoke (cSt) - Singapore's best-selling bunker grade - fell for the second consecutive month to 2,849,100 tonnes - a decline of 59,600 tonnes, or 2.0 percent.

In comparison with previous years, it is the third-highest October figure ever recorded. 380 cSt sales were up by 152,300 tonnes, or 5.6 percent compared to 2014. It is the eighth monthly year-on-year increase so far this year.

500 cSt volumes plummeted 160,800 tonnes, or 21.8 percent to 576,000 tonnes. It is the lowest figure in 19 months - since March 2014. In tonnage terms, the decline is the biggest since Bunker Index began recording Singapore volume data in 2008. In percentage terms, it is the biggest drop since November 2010.

Last month's 500 cSt result is 118,600 tonnes, or 17.1 percent lower than in October 2014.

Below are tables of bunker sales in Singapore for each fuel grade in 2015, 2014, 2013, 2012 and 2011 with accumulated totals in the bottom row.
