'Baywatch' stunt at MEPC meeting

Organisation calls on MEPC to 'be a life saver' and consider measures to reduce emissions.

Oxfam carried out a 'Baywatch style' publicity stunt at the headquarters of the International Maritime Organisation this morning.

Oxfam 'lifeguards' arrived “Baywatch style’ by boat along the River Thames to place a giant lifebelt over the anchor of the metal ship sculpture outside the IMO building.

On shore as they docked, Oxfam activists demonstrated, brandishing placards shaped like lifebelts with the message: Climate Change Kills - Be a Life Saver. They also handed out ‘logbooks’ to the delegates as they entered the building.

The stunt took place as government officials and shipping experts of the IMO arrived on the first day of a five-day Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) meeting.

Oxfam is calling for delegates to consider measures to reduce uncapped and rising shipping emissions, while at the same time raising more than $10 billion per year in new climate cash through the auctioning of emission permits.
