Award nomination for LNG-powered ship

Eco-friendly LNG/MDO hybrid is nominated for Ship of the Year award.

The LNG-powered KV Bergen has been nominated for the "Ship of the Year - 2010" award in Norway.

The eco-friendly newbuild was delivered by Myklebust Verft/Kleven Maritime to shipowner Remøy Management AS, based in Fosnavåg, Norway, during the spring of this year.

The award will be presented by Norwegian maritime publication Skipsrevyen on Wednesday, September 8 2010 in Hamburg, Germany. The ceremony will coincide with the Shipbuilding, Machinery & Marine Technology International Trade Fair (SMM Exhibition), due to be held in Hamburg on September 7-10 2010.

"KV Bergen - with its sister vessels KV Barentshav and KV Sortland - are by far the world's most energy efficient and environmentally friendly coast guard vessels, primarily due to the use of LNG (liquefied natural gas) as its primary source of fuel," Kleven Maritime said in a statement.

The hybrid also has a large marine diesel oil (MDO) engine in order to ensure relatively high speed (max 20 knots) and towing performance when required. This, along with an optimized hull with very low resistance through the water aims to optimize fuel consumption during the vessel's main operations - patrolling at low speed in rough waters.

The reduction in NOX emissions when using LNG instead of MDO has been measured at around 90 percent and the reduction in CO2 emissions has been measured at 25 percent, Kleven Maritime said.
