Bunker One has announced the launch of a new business unit that is due to start performing offshore bunker deliveries in the Gulf of Mexico by mid-October.

The new operation will be offering bunkering services off both the Texas and Louisiana coastlines using the supply tanker M/T Barbarica.

The Barbarica is a specialized tanker for ship-to-ship (STS) and offshore bunker operations that Bunker One says will be used to meet the needs of tanker owners and operators lightering in the Gulf of Mexico. The supplier will be providing marine fuel deliveries in all four key lightering zones: Galveston Offshore Lightering Area (GOLA), South Sabine Pass, South West Pass and Louisiana Offshore Oil Port (LOOP).

Bunker One's new delivery tanker will be supplying high-sulphur RMG 380 and RMG 180 fuel oil as well as marine gas oil (MGO) with a maximum sulphur content of 0.1 percent. It has an IFO storage capacity of 15,000 metric tonnes and an MGO capacity of 3,000 tonnes.

The new Gulf of Mexico unit will be headed by Aegean Marine Petroleum's former director of sales and marketing, Georgia Kounalakis, who joins the team with nearly two decades worth of commercial and operational experience in the bunkering industry.

Newly appointed Theodoris Motsenigos will be responsible for all operational matters.

Kounalakis said: "I am energized by the strategic initiatives and vision of Bunker One, Physical, and look very much forward to the value creation this physical supply platform brings to the industry. I am confident the M/T Barbarica will serve as the safest and most efficient refueling solution for all customers operating in the region."

Commenting on the new operation, Peter Zachariassen, Global Director at Bunker One, remarked: "We believe that there are substantial synergies to be captured with our existing US footprint and the solid structure already put in place - ensuring our leadership position leading into 2020. I am very pleased to welcome Georgia and Theodoris to my team. They are highly skilled and experienced professionals and very dedicated to providing customers with excellent service delivery."
