LOI signed to equip boat with fuel cells

Planned collaboration comprises feasibility study, vessel construction and commercialization.

Fuel cell company PowerCell Sweden AB and Nimbus Boats Sweden AB - a leading Scandinavian manufacturer of leisure boats - have signed a letter of intent (LOI) to equip an electrified Nimbus 305 Coupe boat with fuel cells.

The planned collaboration comprises the following three phases: a feasibility study, the construction of a demonstration vessel, and industrialization for commercial sale.

Built in Sweden at the Nimbus yard in Mariestad, the Nimbus 305 Coupe is said to provide low fuel consumption at all speeds.

The aim is to provide the demonstration vessel with either two PowerCell MS-20 fuel cell systems - a fuel cell system based on the PowerCell S2 stack, totalling 50 kilowatts (kW), or around 70 horsepower - or a 100-kW Power Cell S3, which can deliver 134 horsepower.

PowerCell points out that an advantage of using its fuel cell stacks is that they are scalable and modular, which means that they can deliver several hundred horsepower if necessary.

"PowerCell's fuel cell technology enables Nimbus to supply the ship with silent electric power, with no emissions except for water. It is very interesting to do this together with Nimbus, a company that treasures [the] fossil-free operation of boats," commented Per Wassen, CEO of PowerCell Sweden AB.

Nimbus has already developed innovative solutions for sustainable boating, such as its 'E-Power' and 'Smart Speed' concepts and the launch of the 305 Coupe, which is a 30-foot electric boat for the consumer market.

"We are excited to cooperate with PowerCell in order to take the next step in offering our customers a low-noise solution, enhanced sense of freedom while significantly reducing their CO2 impact. PowerCell's fuel cell stacks are compact and powerful, and provide exciting opportunities for our products," remarked Jan-Erik Lindstrom, CEO of Nimbus Boats Sweden AB.
