Rotterdam bunker sales up 1.8% in 2014


Bunker volumes rise for the first time since 2011 at Europe's leading bunker port.



Annual bunker sales in Rotterdam rose for the first time since 2011 in 2014, according to data published by the Port of Rotterdam.

Total bunker volumes sold last year were 10,615,255 tonnes - up 190,734 tonnes, or 1.8 percent, on the 10,424,521 tonnes supplied in 2013.

Sales of intermediate fuel oil (IFO) rose slightly - by 5,826 tonnes, or 0.6 percent - to 9,827,083 tonnes, up from 9,821,257 tonnes the previous year.

Marine gas oil (MGO) volumes jumped 162,215 tonnes, or 31.9 percent, to 670,122 tonnes, up from 507,907 tonnes in 2013. During the last quarter of 2014, MGO sales skyrocketed 109,268 tonnes, or 76.8 percent, to 251,457 tonnes in the run up to the implementation of stricter Emission Control Area (ECA) regulations on January 1, 2015, requiring ships to burn marine fuel with a sulphur content no greater than 0.1 percent.

Meanwhile, sales of marine diesel oil (MDO) also rose significantly during the last three months of 2014, rising from 3,104 tonnes to 12,412 tonnes. Overall, 2014 volumes were up by 19,436 tonnes, or 594 percent, compared to the previous year.

Lubricant sales were also higher in 2014, rising to 95,343 tonnes, up from 92,085 tonnes in 2013.
