First ship-to-ship transfer for UK firm

UK company helps client avoid lengthy delays with delivery of marine gas oil.

UK-based Geos Group recently carried out its first ship-to-ship fuel transfer of marine gas oil (MGO).

Commenting on the operation, Geos Group said: "An offshore support vessel needed fuel in port, but with no ex-pipe supply available it was facing an extra journey and a lengthy delay in its programme. We were able to berth alongside and fuel the vessel during its operations, and got it on its way quickly."

"In an operation of this kind, the supplying vessel needs to have the appropriate equipment, procedures and approvals to carry out the transfer. In addition, the crew must be fully trained in all aspects of the delivery, including safety procedures and spill response," the company added.

Commenting on the reasons customers opt for ship-to-ship transfers, Geos Group said: "Ship-to-ship transfer of fuel can be an attractive solution for operators when all other options are too expensive or will incur delays. In some cases, due to restricted access to port facilities, local fuelling options are not available, making ship-to-ship transfer the preferred option."

Geos Group currently offers ship-to-ship transfer of MGO to ships in UK east coast ports, on a case-by-case basis and subject to a minimum order quantity.
