BIX monthly average dips in May


Monthly global bunker average falls for the third consecutive month to its lowest level since July 2012.

The average global monthly Bunker Index (BIX) price declined for the third consecutive month in May, according to Bunker Index price data.

The BIX global monthly average decreased by $4.64 per tonne, or 0.6 percent, to $786.61 per tonne last month, down from $791.25 per tonne in April. It is the lowest monthly price since July 2012.

Last month's global average is also the first since July 2012 to be under $790 per tonne. It is only the fourth time since February 2011 that the BIX has been below $800-per-tonne levels.

May's $4.64-per-tonne decrease is the smallest since May 2010 and the least significant overall price change since September 2011.

In a comparison with previous years, May 2013 was $58.93 per tonne lower than the $845.54 average price recorded in May 2012 and $35.47 per tonne lower than the $822.08 per tonne figure seen in May 2011.
